As part of a joint project by the International Peace Institute (IPI) and the International Dialogue Centre KAICIID, Štefan Emrich collaborated with Philippe Rivière to develop the Peacemap data platform. The goal was to create a structured database of NGOs working around the world and make information about those organizations accessible through an interactive web application.

The primary challenge was enabling an internationally distributed research team to work simultaneously on a shared dataset. At the same time, data quality, privacy, and data integrity had to be maintained without creating significant manual overhead for data management and consistency.

To address these requirements, Štefan Emrich developed the platform’s data backend, supporting the entire data collection and maintenance workflow. New entries were automatically checked for errors, addresses were geocoded into geographic coordinates, the research team was notified of inconsistencies, and the respective NGOs were automatically contacted. Organizations could review their information and submit corrections or updates themselves whenever necessary.

Because Peacemap was designed as a long-term platform, all validated records were automatically published each day for use in the interactive web application. While Philippe Rivière developed the user interface and visualizations, a scalable data pipeline was created behind the scenes to automate the platform’s ongoing operation.
